Following our recent cross-party open letter to Government, backed by over 65 parliamentarians, Paulette Hamilton MP has highlighted the importance of treating postpartum haemorrhage as a national maternity safety priority.
Drawing on her 25 years of experience as an NHS district nurse, Paulette commented:
“Having worked as an NHS district nurse for 25 years, I know how quickly complications during childbirth can become life-threatening and how important it is that maternity teams have the right tools and treatments available when every minute counts.
“It is deeply concerning that severe bleeding during childbirth has reached such high levels. We also know that maternity outcomes are not equal, with Black women continuing to face unacceptable inequalities in maternal care. The Government’s maternity safety plans must put reducing these disparities at their heart.
“That means treating postpartum haemorrhage as a national maternity safety priority, investing in our maternity services and ensuring that proven treatments and innovations are available quickly and equitably across the NHS. No woman’s safety during childbirth should depend on her ethnicity or where she lives.”
We are grateful to Paulette for adding her voice to the Protect Against Birth Haemorrhage Campaign’s call for action, and for helping to raise awareness of the urgent need to improve outcomes for women and families.
